    The Art of Dunsparce

Post by lotteries on Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:51 am

For years, Dunsparce has been shunned from all sorts of metagames, even NU. Him and his large movepool is just wasted.
Why is this? Well, I'll tell you why, plain and simple: his stats aren't amazing, and he looks like he's a lazy oaf.

What most don't know though, is that there is something else to be learned.
A secret power, an art; locked away in the hidden depths of Dunsparce's big floppy eyes, through to his mysterious core, where unknown thoughts roam...

    Well enough with the poetry.

Anyways, a big reason why Dunsparce is ignored all the time is, surprisingly, because no one knows his ability. They just assume it's crap.
A Pokemon's ability can be the different between being Uber and NU. I'll get into that later.

First, let's go ahead and assess Dunsparce's stats.
    His defenses:

    - HP: 100
    - Def: 70
    - SpD: 65

Honestly, this isn't half bed. His HP saves him here; lots of HP helps cover for his average defenses.

Now lets look at Dunsparce's attacking stats:

    Atk: 70
    SpA: 65

Average. This is Dunsparce's weakest spot; however, this is enough; it really is. It'll make sense later, trust me.
With Dunsparce's speed less than 50 as his base stat, it kind of sucks, but it turns out you don't need it.

    Let's look at his typing: normal. Definitely not the worse, as you have no weakness but fighting, and an immunity to ghosts. Fighting weakness is pretty unlucky considering many powerful attacks come with that typing. As long as you stay away from that though, you should be fine. (;

Ability. This is where it gets interesting:
Serene Grace - doubles the chance of all secondary effects to work.

With that in mind, let's go ever all of the moves Dunsparce can learn.
    First, the status moves:

    Yawn
    Glare
    Screech
    Toxic
    Attract
    Swagger
    Thunder wave

I think that about covers every type of status you can have.

Now lets look at some attacking moves:
    * = a chance that something will happen

    Pursuit
    Ancientpower*
    Rock Slide*
    Bite*
    Headbutt*
    Zen Headbutt*
    Snore*
    Water Pulse*
    Ice beam*
    T-bolt*
    Earthquake
    Fire blast*
    Shadow Ball*
    Facade
    Charge Beam*
    Gyro Ball

All the attacks with asterisks are of course, affected by Serene grace.

Now, let's take any status move, and any attacking move with an asterisk.
    Swagger, Headbutt.

Let's calculate the % chance of getting an attack off:
    (.25)(.4) = .1 = 10%

Your opponent has a 10% chance of attacking, while you get a headbutt with STAB off.

Let's say, hypothetically, your opponent is infatuated, confused, paralyzed, and you use headbutt, with Serene Grace present.
That comes down to 1-2%. Seriously.

    Starting to get it?

Let's look at some other moves of Dunsparce.

    Roost
    Endeavor
    Last Resort
    Flail
    Curse
    Magic Coat
    Calm Mind
    Sunny Day
    Rain Dance
    Protect
    Rest
    Sleep Talk
    Substitute
    Stealth Rock

    Wow, lots of diversity here.
Some weather moves, some set up moves, some healing moves...etc.

Finally, let me show you some different combos I have found.
Yes, I found these myself, and you can't find this on Smogon or anywhere.

The EV's I will be using for all of these movesets is as follows:

    144 HP / 252 Atk or SpA / 36 Def / 76 SpD

The EV's listed provide the most efficient defense possible.
Usually, we will be using regular attack, but special attack is always an option.

Also, assume the item being used is leftovers.
Natures will either be adamant or modest, depending on the attacks., obviously.

I will specify if I change any of this.

    Now, on to the movesets.

    ________________

    Dunsparce moveset #1 "Standard Sparce"

    ~ T-wave
    ~ Headbutt
    ~ Rock Slide
    ~ Yawn

Ah, one of my favorite diverse sets to use. Whether you want to T-wave or yawn just depends on your situation really. T-wave makes your opponent slower, allowing you to use headbutt (STAB) or rock slide for paraflinch hax. A very good set to use if you can't think of anything else, really.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #2 "Flailsparce"

    ~ Flail
    ~ Endure
    ~ Rock Slide
    ~ Headbutt

The idea here is to baton pass from your ninjask or yamnega (or any speed boost) and use endure to get to 1 HP. Flail is a great move with STAB, and you have two other flinching moves if you want to use those. Can be a pwnful late-game sweep.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #3 "Chargesparce"

    ~ Charge Beam
    ~ Ice beam
    ~ Water Pulse
    ~ T-wave

This really is a cool set. You get a SpA boost every turn with Charge Beam, and after one or two, you get great coverage with the rest of the moves you have. And don't forget about double the chance of confusion with water pulse, as well as double the chance for a freeze.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #4 "Status Ftw"

    ~ T-wave
    ~ Swagger
    ~ Toxic
    ~ Roost

Haha. Mess with you're opponent big time. Only a small chance of attacking, and when your opponent finally does (if they even do), roost off the damage. Can work even better if you can get something else to mean look or something and baton pass out to Dunsparce.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #5 "Send-back-Sparce"

    ~ Counter
    ~ Magic Coat
    ~ T-wave / Protect
    ~ Headbutt / Rock Slide

The main purpose of this set is to just send back status and attacking moves. The other two moves just help you pull of paraflinch and stuff.

    _

    Dunsparce moveset #6 "Sleeper Sparce"

    ~ Rest
    ~ Snore
    ~ Yawn
    ~ Bite / Zen Headbutt

Absorb sleep, spread sleep. Snore gets STAB and has a 30% chance of flinch if you didn't already know (a lot of people don't). Last slot is filler.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #7 "Weather Sparce"

    ~ Sunny Day
    ~ Solar Beam
    ~ Flamethrower / Fire Blast
    ~ Headbutt / bite / T-wave

This set could potentially be used on a UU Sunny Day team. It's worth a mention, anyway.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #8 "Physical Sparce"

    ~ Thunder Wave
    ~ Headbutt
    ~ Gyro Ball
    ~ Bite / Rock slide

A physical attacker form of Dunsparce.; t-waving is always a good idea to make yourself faster, as well as using paraflinch. Gyro ball can put a big dent in a lot of pokes, oddly enough.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #9 "Sexy Sparce"

    ~ Attract
    ~ T-wave
    ~ Swagger
    ~ Headbutt / Bite

Hehe. All this up = 2% chance of attacking. I've used this before and got some lolz with it.

    __

    Dunsparce moveset #10 "Curse Sparce"

    ~ Curse
    ~ Gyro ball
    ~ T-wave
    ~ Headbutt / Bite

A lot like the physical set, but along with paraflinch, you can some boosted Def and Atk with curse, as well as more power with a gyro ball.

    __

And last but not least...definitely not least...

    Dunsparce moveset #11 "Epic Win"
    * may use life orb / silk scarf

    ~ T-wave
    ~ Last Resort

    Whoa.
T-wave to make your opponent slower, and unleash your Life Orb'd Last Resort with STAB. Simple, effective. Life Orb would be just fine here since you don't have that many Last Resorts PP wise. Also, go ahead and max both attack and speed, if you want.

    ________________

Well, that pretty much does it for the movesets.

    A few more things though, before I come to closure;

By all means necessary: create your own movesets, EV's, combos and strategies.
I just named a few of the possible move combinations. There's more, you know!

This goes for all of your poke-making too. Make your own stuff! Who says you have to do everything Smogon's way?

    ***

But anyways, I hope you have a better perspective on Dunsparce after all that I've showed you.
It really is a fun pokemon to use, in all tiers, really.

If you're running a paraflinching Dunsparce you can predict well, then...well, your opponent better watch out, frankly. :D

Thanks for reading! Remember; don't ignore the never-used of the never-used pokes. You never know how good they might turn out to be!

Comments, suggestions, questions, etc. are welcome,
    Sorry I didn't proofread anything.

And for the record, Dunsparce probably won't do exceedingly well in OU, but it works awesome in UU and under. I'm not even saying it doesn't work in OU; like I said, if you predict right, your opponent could be screwed xD

Fire Blast I think can burn, and Shadow Ball can lower Sp. Def. c:
Some asterisks I think you missed.

Sexy Sparce made me lol, btw. xD

Great guide, for feedback Sharpie(You want to be called that right?)

Swagger would be best in my opinion. Especially on a special attacker.

This is awesome, it really does show how awesome dunsparce could be.
Almost everything is good, except for this one thing:

    "Dunsparce moveset #2 "Flailsparce"

    ~ Flail
    ~ Endure
    ~ Rock Slide
    ~ Headbutt

The idea here is to baton pass from your ninjask or yamnega (or any speed boost) and use endure to get to 1 HP. /Fail/ is a great move with STAB, and you have two other flinching moves if you want to use those. Can be a pwnful late-game sweep."

You made a typo on flail. ;P
Everything else seemed good to me.
I might just use a dunsparce xD
